Mount Eliza
Travelling south of Frankston over Olivers Hill, the coastal and bushland beauty of Mount Eliza soon becomes apparent. Situated on an outcrop of land overlooking Canadian Bay and Port Phillip coastline, the beachside area of Mount Eliza consists of jagged cliffs featuring scenic walking tracks above stretches of sandy beaches below.
Initially a holiday destination for Melbourne’s gentry, the township of Mount Eliza remained a holiday home area until the 1950’s. With advent of modern day transport and sub-division of old family estates, the township developed rapidly from the late 1960’s. The Ranelagh Estate, designed by Walter Burley Griffin of Canberra fame, saw blocks of land with sea views developed in sympathy with the contours of the land.
Today, Mount Eliza has become popular to many people in the higher socio-economic sector. Residential areas along the coastline feature many up-market dream homes and weekend retreats. East of Nepean Highway newer subdivisions now sprawl over granite hinterland hills, from which easterly views of the Moorooduc Plains are available. The delightful “Village” commercial centre services the area, offering modern supermarkets, speciality shops, cafes and restaurants.
Mornington
Once a remote seaside village, these days Mornington is a fast-growing residential area but still manages to retain a country atmosphere, which is best reflected in its pedestrian-friendly shopping centre, Mornington Park and at the attractive boat harbour.
Settlement began in the 1840’s and many fine buildings still line its main streets, including the residences of Beleura Hill and The Grand and Royal hotels.
A coastline of red bluffs with several lookout points characterises the landscape. Several safe swimming beaches for the family with bathing boxes and close proximity to Main Street shopping.
There various eating and dining establishments, speciality shops, supermarkets, Mornington Centro shopping plaza, a regional art gallery and close by the local winerys of the Mornington Peninsula.
